53 people shot on the Amsteldijk
As reprisal for an unintended and failed attempt on Rauter’s life, people across the Netherlands are executed by the Nazis. At Rozenoord on the Amsteldijk, 53 people are executed. Passersby are forced to stand and watch.
Rauter is responsible for the police and security forces in occupied Holland. This position makes him not only responsible for the deportation of the Jews; but also for eliminating the resistance, deporting Dutch men to forced German labour camps and breaking the February Strike in 1941.
Reprisals
In retaliation for attacks by the resistance the Germans often conduct harsh reprisals against the civilian population. Towards the end of the war these become even harsher. They set houses on fire, execute prisoners and even randomly selected civilians out on the streets.
