Anne Frank - Shaking houses
On 26 March 1944 allied aircraft bomb strategic targets in IJmuiden. More than 350 allied aircraft take part and drop more than 650 tons of bombs. Unfortunately the raid isn’t successful.
The bunkers which they targeted are not destroyed. The bombing raid can be heard for miles around, in the secret annex too. According to Anne the houses shake ‘like blades of grass in the wind.’ Each bombing raid leads to great anxiety in the secret annex. The people in hiding can’t go anywhere else. They can only wait and hope that they aren’t hit.
Anne Frank
In 1934 Anne Frank arrives in the Netherlands from Germany. Together with her parents, she lives on the Merwedeplein in the Rivierenbuurt neighbourhood. More and more Jewish refugees from Nazi Germany settle here. Anne feels at home and soon learns the language.
In 1940 an end comes to these happy times when the German army occupies the Netherlands. The Frank family goes into hiding in the secret annex and manages to stay there for almost 2 years.
