An attack on the detention centre on the Weteringschans
There are many important members of the Resistance detained here.
Despite it being dangerous Gerrit van der Veen plans an attack on the detention centre to rescue several of his friends. 28 people work on the plan. An important factor is the guard, van Welsum, who will open the door for them.
The attack goes wrong, almost from the beginning. Van der Veen has to shoot an aggressive dog and the noise alerts German guards. They start shooting and van der Veen is wounded. Everyone gets away including van der Veen who is paralyzed from the waist down.
The SD searches for them and on 12 May van der Veen is found and arrested. On 10 June, van der Veen, along with four other resistance members are executed in the dunes near Overveen.
Resistance
People against the Nazis commit acts of resistance. These people are mostly organized into small groups which are often part of a larger organization. Acts of resistance include; helping people in hiding, stealing and forging ration coupons and identity papers, attacks on public records offices and distribution offices, sabotage, assassinating German military personnel and collaborators; printing and distributing illegal newspapers.
