A familiar sound
Anne Frank can see the Westerkerk tower from a hole in the side of the attic in the secret annex.
The Westerkerk is just a stone’s throw away from the secret annex. The carillon can be heard in the hiding place. It keeps the people in hiding awake at night, but Anne likes it. Anne writes:
‘Father, mother and Margot still can’t get used to the chiming of the Westertoren clock, which tells us the time every quarter of an hour. Not me, I liked it from the start; it sounds so reassuring, especially at night.’ "
The bells are silent
In August 1943 Anne realizes that the bells are silent. She thinks they have been confiscated for what she refers to in her diary sarcastically as ‘factory use’. Many bells were melted down by the Nazis to make into weapons.
