Nol Escher - ‘Has he gone into hiding?’
‘Everyday when I leave school he walks towards me along the Apollolaan. Briefcase in his hand, a big hat on, a big nose, Jewish star. I try to look in his eyes, but he doesn’t see me. He’s always in a hurry. I daren’t talk to him. But I haven’t seen him for couple of days.
What’s happened to him? Oh, I suppose I really do know. There are less and less these days. I daren’t ask my father because I think it’s unfair to ask him something that he doesn’t want to answer while we all know what the answer really is. Has he gone into hiding? Or is he in Westerbork? So many go there. I don’t want to know what happens to them.’
