Jewish children in ‘The Crèche’ opposite the Hollandsche Schouwburg
Because the Hollandsche Schouwburg is full, the children of families assembled there are taken to the so-called ‘crèche’. This is situated across the road on the Plantage Middenlaan. The crèche is actually called 'Vereeniging Zuigelingen-Inrichting en Kinderhuis'. led by Henriëtte Henriquez Pimentel and is not strictly guarded.
By fiddling the enrollment of children in the Dutch Theatre they are able to smuggle children out without them being missed. This way about 1,000 children are sent to different parts of the Netherlands.
Going into hiding
People go into hiding to protect themselves from the German occupier. Between 1942 and 1943 it’s mainly Jews who go into hiding; but, later more and more young men do so too in order to avoid being sent to work in Germany. Resistance members and strikers often also go into hiding.
