Last seen in the Hollandsche Schouwburg
These photographs were taken by Lydia Riezow from the window of her house. The girl wearing white socks in the foreground is her friend Greetje Velleman.
Form her living room window on the Plantage Kerklaan, seventeen year-old Lydia Riezow looked out over the courtyard of the Hollandsche Schouwburg. She could see that the people were only allowed out sometimes. They have no idea what is going to happen to them. Lydia sees her Jewish friend Greetje Velleman and takes a photo of her. One day Greetje had gone, Lydia never sees her again.
Hollandsche Schouwburg - Dutch Theatre
From 1941, this theatre was one of the few places where Jewish artists could perform. Only Jews were allowed to attend performances. From 1942, the theatre was used as a collection point for Amsterdam’s Jews. After raids, large groups of Jews were brought to this theatre. From here they were transported to Westerbork.
