Hélène Egger - ‘Everybody looked at it’
‘In the meantime we all had to wear a star. At first I thought it a strange thing. Mostly because the word Jew was so big. It was a piece of fabric that smelled a bit musty. It had to be sewn onto your coat. I started to like it. Everyone looked at it. I was a child, so I thought that was interesting. But my grandmother never left the house again, she was ashamed. She didn’t want to go out wearing that thing.’
