Anne Frank - Sad news from the outside world
On 16 November 1942 Fritz Pfeffer joins the people in hiding in the secret annex. He brings bad news. Anne writes about this in her diary:
‘Pfeffer has told us much about the outside world we’ve missed for so long. He had sad news. Countless friends and acquaintances have been taken off to a dreadful fate. Night after night, green and grey military vehicles cruise the streets. They knock on every door, asking whether any Jews live there. If so, the whole family is immediately taken away. If not, they proceed to the next house. It’s impossible to escape their clutches unless you go into hiding.’ - Anne Frank, 19 November 1942.
Prinsengracht 263
On 1 December 1940, Otto Frank moves his business from the Singel to a larger building on the Prinsengracht at number 263 near the Westerkerk (church). From 6 July 1942 to 4 August 1944 the Frank family and four others hide in the secret annex behind this building.
