Overview of the distribution of Jews in Amsterdam
In May 1941 the Amsterdam council makes an overview of the distribution of Jews in Amsterdam for Böhmcker, the legal representative of the Reich Commissioner for Amsterdam. This map becomes known as the ‘dots map’ because dots are used to represent the number of Jews per housing block. Each dot represents 10 Jews.
Böhmcker wants to establish a closed Jewish neighbourhood. He regularly asks for new maps in order to substantiate this. But no Jewish ghetto is established, Böhmcker gets no further than erecting signs which state; ‘Jewish street’ and ‘Jewish canal’.

Persecution of the Jews
Shortly after Hitler comes to power in Germany, the persecution of the Jews starts. The aim is to get rid of all Jews in Germany. The Nazis isolate Jews from non-Jews. Molestation and vandalism become the order of the day. The Nazis continue these practices in the occupied countries. Sometimes Jews become forced labourers but most are systematically murdered. The majority of the Jews in the Netherlands are deported to concentration camps where they are killed in gas chambers. The murder of European Jews – in total circa 6 million – is known as the Holocaust or the Shoah.
