Joop Zoutberg - Refuge in the matzo factory
Joop Zoutberg is not Jewish but lives in the Jewish neighbourhood in Amsterdam. His father is manager of the matzo factory. Even before the German occupation, eight year old Joop is confronted by the consequences of the Nazi regime.
‘At the end of the 1930’s more and more German Jews fled to Amsterdam. Many people found a temporary home in the attic above the Matzo factory. They brought the craziest things with them. One time there was even a washing wringer in the grounds of the factory. My younger brother lost his fingernails in that. We thought it would be good idea if he put his fingers in the wringer while we turned it. Not a good idea.’
