Air raid shelter on the Amsteldijk
Air raid shelters were built in Dutch cities after the German invasion of Poland in September 1939. Anti-aircraft guns are placed around the outskirts of cities.

Danger from the air
There are also victims of bombing raids in the Netherlands. From the beginning of the war the British air force bombs strategic targets such as military establishments, oil reserves, ammunition supplies and factories. But not all bombs fall on their targets and schools, houses and shops are often hit causing fatalities. The Dutch spend night after night in their basements.
