Anne's poem
The year is 1936. Anne has lived at number 37 Merwedeplein for two years. Sanne Ledermann (middle) is one of Anne’s best friends.
She fled with her family to the Netherlands from Berlin in 1933. She lives near to Anne. Sanne’s older sister, Barbara is friends with Anne’s older sister, Margot.
Speaking German together
The girl on the left is Eva Goldberg. She regularly plays with the other girls when she stays with her two aunts on the Merwedeplein. She only speaks German so it’s not easy for her to play with Dutch children.
Farewell from Eva
This photo was taken by Eva’s mother. Eva remains friends with Anne until 1939 when she and her family move to England.

Anne writes a poem in Eva’s poetry album:
‘Dear Eva,
Share your joy with many,
fun and pleasure with everyone,
your sorrow with only a few,
and with those you love your heart.
In memory of your friend
Anne Frank’

Anne Frank
In 1934 Anne Frank arrives in the Netherlands from Germany. Together with her parents, she lives on the Merwedeplein in the Rivierenbuurt neighbourhood. More and more Jewish refugees from Nazi Germany settle here. Anne feels at home and soon learns the language.
In 1940 an end comes to these happy times when the German army occupies the Netherlands. The Frank family goes into hiding in the secret annex and manages to stay there for almost 2 years.
