Margot, sweetness itself
Margot Frank is Anne Frank’s sister. She’s three years older. She’s nine years old when this photo is taken in 1935.
From 4 January 1934 to July 1938 Margot attends the Jeker School. This school is close to the Merwedeplein where the Frank family live. Today the building in the Jekerstraat isn’t a school, it houses, among other things, a centre for after school activities.
Fleeing to the Netherlands
The Frank family flee to the Netherlands in 1933. They no longer feel safe in Germany now that Hitler has come to power. His politics are anti-Jewish.
Margot learns quickly
Margot starts school a month after arriving in Amsterdam. She’s almost eight years old. She starts in the second class. She is held back for another year in this class but at the end of 1934 she is promoted to the third class when she gets a pass mark for Dutch on her report. From then on she always gets good marks, not only for Dutch but for other subjects too.
Sweet pupil
Her teacher calls her a ‘sweet pupil’, and sweet is also the word her friends use to describe her. On 27 September 1942 Anne Frank writes about her sister in her diary:
‘…she’s naturally good, kind and clever, perfection itself.’
