Standing in line on the Kloveniersvoorburgwal for a free bicycle tax disc
Unemployed stand in line outside the tax office on the Kloveniersvoorburgwal for an application form for a free bicycle tax disc. The unemployed do not have to pay tax for their bicycles.
The economic crisis
In the 1930s the Dutch economy is in bad shape. In 1938, the number of the unemployed rose to 439,000. The unemployed receive government support but this is not a lot. There is much hunger and poverty. The government begins large building projects to create employment. The work is hard and the wages are low. This is compulsory work for the unemployed and they are only allowed home once every fortnight.
