Winston Churchill visits Amsterdam
Queen Wilhelmina and Sir Winston Churchill on the balcony of the Royal Palace on the Dam. The former British Prime Minister visits the Netherlands from 8 to 13 May 1946 to celebrate the first anniversary of the liberation.
In the Amsterdam Town Hall he is presented with a medal. He tours Amsterdam with members of the Royal Family by car and boat.
He is cheered by 30,000 people on the Dam.
The Dam
Square in the middle of Amsterdam and the historical heart of the city. On 7 May 1945, shortly after the liberation, a bloodbath takes place here when German soldiers open fire on the crowd which is celebrating.
