Joop Zoutberg – ‘Preying on the property of murdered Jews’
The factory stopped producing matzos in 1943 because there weren’t any customers anymore.
Joop Zoutberg talks about after the war. ‘One of Isidor de Haan’s old business partners suggested a sneaky way of taking over the factory to my father. De Haan didn’t return and if my father declared that de Haan had signed a confession that he had put his factory up as collateral for a debt, then the factory would be theirs. That’s how people tried to take over the property of murdered Jews.’
After the war they tried to get the matzo factory started again but there wasn’t enough demand for this typically Jewish product.
