Joop Zoutberg - ‘They were shot before my very eyes’
‘In May 1945 there were rumours that the Canadians were driving down the Weesperzijde and that there had been shooting on the Dam. I tried to get to the Dam to see what was going on but half way there I came across men from the Binnenlandse Strijdkrachten armed with guns. I saw a couple of elderly Landwachters (NSB members) with a horse and cart coming our way. They were often called ‘Jan Hagels’ because of their long hunting rifles. To my surprise the men from the BS opened fire and even though the war was over the landwachters were shot before my eyes.’
