I remember Anne

Yesterday Anne’s tree fell.

Pushed by wind and rain,

battered by rot and moths,

the tree fell down,

and crashed into a courtyard in Amsterdam.

Anne loved that chestnut,

from the Frank`s secret annex.

Raindrops shone like silver on its branches,

reaching upwards where seagulls glided.

Yesterday Anne’s beloved tree fell,

and come Arbour Day,

I will plant a new tree on African soil,

in her memory.

We must honour Anne`s legacy,

and rebuild with hope.

For one generation plants,

and another gets the shade.

Like her tree firmly rooted,

stretching upwards,

with the promise of life,

I will remember Ann.
